The Waikato Multicultural Council Inc. was thrilled to be invited to the vibrant Diwali celebrations hosted by the Tairāwhiti Multicultural Council in Gisborne. Gisborne the city of first sunrise in New Zealand and whole of the world. Four of our representatives, including President Ravinder Powar, Treasurer Anil Gupta, Committee Member Wendy Zhai, and Publicity Officer Dr. Vinay Karanam, joined the festivities.
Gisborne, a beautiful city with warm hospitality, welcomed us with open arms. The event was graced by the presence of local dignitaries, including Hon. Dana Kirkpatrick, MP, Her Worship the Mayor Rehette Stoltz, and ex-Mayor Meng Liu Foon.
The evening was a feast for the senses! We enjoyed a delicious spread of traditional Indian delicacies, including Medu Wada Coconut Chutney (prepared in Kerala style), Punjabi Samosa, Golgappa, Awadhi style Vegetable Biriyani, and Pista Kulfi – all served free of charge for everyone attending the event. The vibrant atmosphere was further enhanced by live music performed by a local troupe.
The celebrations were further spiced up by captivating performances from local artists and renowned performers from Auckland, who have been gracing stages for years with their talent. The event also saw the launch of "Diverse Tairāwhiti - Celebrating Strength Through Diversity," a book written by Gillian Moon.
Two prestigious awards were presented to deserving individuals in recognition of their tireless contributions to the Tairāwhiti Multicultural Council.
The evening concluded with a heartfelt closing speech by President Ravinder Powar of the Waikato Multicultural Council Inc. and Rizwaana Latiff, President of the Hawkes Bay Multicultural Association.
